Being Michael’s Daddy

Big Help

November 29th, 2009

Michael was itching to help me put up Christmas lights today. It’s a big job, and requires use of the much-hallowed ladder, that glorious construct that allows a person of small stature to achieve great heights.

Daddy was up on the ladder, mommy was helping out below.

“I can climb the ladder!” Michael announces, proudly.

“No, daddy is up there right now,” his mom says, reaching out to give me another handful of gutter clips.

“But I’m not scared!”

“Michael, I’m up on the ladder right now. Only one person can be on the ladder at a time,” I begin.

“It’s okay. I can be here,” he says, and starts up.

“Michael, now you’re in the way! How am I supposed to get down?”

“Fall,” he said, without missing a beat.

I’ll keep him in my will, but he’s not getting my ladder.

Just wait until he finds out about power tools.

The Ladder is my 6Y0′s favorite toy. You can usually find ours in the middle of the den with a blanket over it and my kitchen utensils underneath it. Sometimes we even use it for other things, like reaching tall stuff.

(MD) He’s quite a conundrum; wants to climb the ladder but he’s still scared of heights. I’m gratified to know Sean likes to make forts; that’s an essential part of boyhood, for sure.

Hehe! That is one way to get down the ladder.

(MD) It’s quick and efficient, just not conducive to further work.

LOL! That would definitely get you down! Glad to hear no one was injured in the decorating process.

(MD) Not yet, anyway. As it is, whenever I’m up on the ladder Michael’s mommy stays posted with the phone in hand, ready to dial 9-1-1 at a moment’s notice.

  4. WeaselMomma

I just spewed all over the keyboard. That’s harsh and funny. Sleep with 1 eye open.
(MD) Seriously. This is why I don’t nap.

This is from the boy who wont sit on his mom’s or dad’s shoulders because he is too scared. What a ham.

(Hubby) Yeah… he wants so bad to be big and brave, but when it comes down to it, he’s just not there yet.

  6. Otter

Such a loving lad. Don’t ever give up the ladder.

(MD) Never. That, and the cordless drill.

  7. Melisa

I’m with WM: you’d better look out!

(MD) I do, every minute of every day.

Who’s Michael?

Michael is the surprise son of a second-time married couple who, having daughters from their respective previous marriages, believed they were through having kids. He's a red-headed ball of fire who hit the ground running and hasn't stopped to take a breath since. Every day he gives me new ways to learn patience, resourcefulness, firmness and love by providing intense training under live fire conditions.
