Being Michael’s Daddy

East to Easter

January 7th, 2010

On our way to school and work, Michael and I step out of the front door and onto the porch. A bitter chill greets us as the wind whips along the walkway.

“Brrrr!” Michael says, pulling his coat close around him.

“Yes, it’s chilly! It’s the cold front from the east seeping over this way,” I explain as I lock the door.

“What’s ‘east’, daddy?” he asks.

“East is a direction. It’s the way we’re facing.”

“I want to see east.”

“It’s that way.”

“Can we go there?”

“You can’t ever really go there, Michael. It’s just that direction.”

“It’s where Easter is?”

“No, that’s something else,” I explain, as I buckle him into his car seat and slide the van door shut.

“I want to have Easter,” he said.

“It’s coming. It’ll be here in the spring.”

“It’s spring now?”

“No, it’s still winter.”

“Is spring in the east?”

“No, it’s winter all over the country.”

“Where’s Easter?”

“Easter isn’t in a place, it’s a holiday. Like Christmas and Thanksgiving. It’s a time.”

“With Easter eggs, and chocolate bunnies,” he added.

“Right!”

“I want to see east.”

“We’re going east,” I said as we drove down the road.

“To Easter?”

“Michael, Easter isn’t a place! It has nothing to do with east!”

“What’s east is?”

“It’s the direction we’re going.”

“Can we see Easter?”

“Sure. We’ll be there in just a minute,” I say, finally.

I try, I really do. But he’s just got more questions in him than I have answers.

Tom, a valiant effort to keep it moving forward though!!! Jake is in the “what do you like about (insert ANYTHING here)”? line of questions these days.. Not as tough, and it forces me to think of what I like about things I don’t always like something about! Take care, my friend!

(MD) Hey, buddy! Aren’t they fun at this age? Questions to them are an artistic medium, and they’re all little Picassos, Dalis and Pollocks. Sounds like your little guy has a great head on his shoulders.

Why is the chicken wearing a cape?

(Hubby) No, the capon is the chicken!

  3. Otter

That is hilarious. I am laughing at my desk right now. I hope my bosses think that somehow engineering can be funny.

(MD) I know I get a lot of laughs out of my engineering here.

  4. Grandma K.

May be time to get out a map or globe!

(MD) Maybe… I’m just pleased he’s got the whole ‘left’ v ‘right’ thing down. I wasn’t so advanced when I was his age.

  5. Chuck

Like Otter I’m sitting at my desk laughing, or rather I was. Now I’m just grinning like a fool. Good stuff!

(MD) Glad you liked it, Chuck! Thanks for coming by.

I vote for going West, young man, if it was good enough for Horace Greeley then it
should be good enough for Mr. Michael, right?

Then there is South and North as in Pole and Santa Claus, so many venues to explore
    and discuss!!!

Sure do miss that little fella, I could keep him entertained I bet but not until my leg is
    all fixed. Love from Gramann

(MD) I think Mr. Greely would be pleased we’re already out west, much as I’d like to spend some time in the south during the winter… like, in Anaheim.

  7. Seashore

I’m sure it gets frustrating, but it is cracking me up! :)

(MD) He cracks me up too. I couldn’t resist sharing yet another “who’s on first?” conversation.

  8. WeaselMomma

Good thing that you are a drinking man.
That conversation was very funny, but only because I wasn’t having it.

(MD) It’s okay. I got to go to work after that. Sweet, wonderful work… where I can relax and escape.

  9. SurprisedMom

Like many of the others I really enjoyed that conversation. Like WeaselMomma, only because I wasn’t having it. Michael is going to grow up to be one of the greatest thinkers of our time!

(MD) I sure hope so. Hopefully he’ll think of a good place to stash his mom and me when we’re in our declining years.

Who’s Michael?

Michael is the surprise son of a second-time married couple who, having daughters from their respective previous marriages, believed they were through having kids. He's a red-headed ball of fire who hit the ground running and hasn't stopped to take a breath since. Every day he gives me new ways to learn patience, resourcefulness, firmness and love by providing intense training under live fire conditions.
