This morning I was determined to get Michael loaded up with protein. Yesterday he got a bolus of sugar and allergens at his school’s Valentine’s day party and came home crying and complaining of a tummy ache. Imagine that.
His mom was going to take him and his sister to the dentist, so I needed to be sure he was properly fed and ready to go.
His sister came down stairs.
“What can I have that has iron in it?” she asked me, out of the blue.
“Uh… nails?” I said, stirring Michael’s eggs.
“No, I mean for my blood. We have a blood drive this morning and I’m donating, and I don’t want to pass out or anything.”
“Hmmm… well, you could have a big steak,” I joked, knowing full well she would recoil in horror at the thought.
“Ewww! I won’t do that!”
“Why not?” Michael asked.
“Because it’s meat! I don’t eat meat,” she said, firmly.
“It’s too bad you’re allergic to meat,” he said.
“She’s not allergic, Michael. She’s a vegetarian. She chooses not to eat meat,” I added.
“How come?”
“Because! I feel bad for the poor little animals!” she whined.
“I know!” Michael chimed, not missing a beat. “You could just eat the big animals, like cows!”
That’s my boy. Always ready with an answer.
Good one Michael! We have a budding stand up comedian!
I had fun telling her about the huge needle they use to take her blood and I will be on standby for when the school calls to say she has passed out. LOL!!! Sister S was never able to donate. They check your temp and she was 99.7*F so they rejected her. I am sure she was just having an immune response from having her teeth cleaned and all. No lingering effects and she is totally fine.
One must ingest iron for many days before being tested so that is the first step for blood donating. As for Michael, he is very sensible given his allergy history. He is pretty good about it, I have noticed. One more thing, on the news tonight they were interviewing a woman who was still working at the age of 105 and when asked her secret, it showed her eating a large chocolate cookie and that is her secret. what a woman!
WE can only hope to follow in her path. More COOKIES!!
Mmmm…cookies.
